Met Police Cyber Crime Unit reinforce Cyber Awareness for the Educational Sector

CAS has been a supporter of the Metropolitan Police Cyber Protect and Cyber Choices (Prevent) programme for several years. The programme supports the education sector of London with ‘Cyber Webinars for Education’ campaign.

Detective Constable Dawn Wood from the Met Police tells us more,

“Cyber crime has accounted for over half of the crime committed in England and Wales over the past 12 months. We have observed a continued trend in educational establishments being targeted and victimised, from internal threats such as the breach of IT infrastructure by pupils, to the loss of essential exam results and infrastructure due to sophisticated ransomware attacks by organised criminal networks.

Furthermore, we are aware from our investigations and academic research that cyber criminals are getting younger, with an average age of just 17 years old. This offending is often the result of a lack of understanding or appreciation that their behaviour is criminal. Therefore, an increased awareness of the law and acceptable online behaviour at a young age is vital to safeguarding these young people and preventing future incidents.”

Webinars for teachers and schools in London

Going back to grass roots, the campaign focuses on key decision makers, teachers and staff to build on their knowledge of the ever growing threat we face of cyber criminality. 3,200 individual primary, secondary, SEN (Special Educational Needs) and PRU (Pupil Referral Unit) Schools together with Further and Higher educational establishments have received an information pack inviting them to a series of free webinars being hosted from 23 February to the end of the academic year.
