At CAS, we’re always on the lookout for updates that help make computing more inclusive and accessible. That’s why we wanted to share the latest news from the micro:bit Educational Foundation and Microsoft MakeCode.

A new accessibility feature means you can now navigate and interact with MakeCode using just a keyboard. This update helps make coding with the micro:bit more accessible for learners who use screen readers, prefer keyboard shortcuts, or find it difficult to use a mouse.

What’s new?

  • Keyboard navigation is now available in the Blocks editor – you can select, move, and connect blocks without using a mouse.

  • Improved screen reader support – the Blocks editor has been designed to work more smoothly with screen readers.

  • Customisable settings – there’s a dedicated accessibility menu where you can adjust preferences, like zoom and colour themes, to suit your needs.

  • Help and guidance – the micro:bit website offers video tutorials and step-by-step instructions to support teachers and learners getting started with keyboard navigation.

Try it out

If you’re using MakeCode in your classroom or club, this is a great opportunity to explore the new accessibility features and consider how they might support a wider range of learners.
