OCR H446 Floating Point Binary

Last edit: 27 October 2026
A ready-to-teach Year 12 lesson for OCR A Level Computer Science (H446), covering specification point 1.4.1 on representing negative numbers in binary.
Pupils represent negative numbers using both sign and magnitude and two’s complement, read the same bit pattern under each method, and explain why the two methods give different ranges. Everything is worked in four bits so the patterns stay easy to see before moving to larger values.
The pack contains:
- 18 slides with speaker notes, including worked examples and checks for understanding
- A worksheet in three sections (support, core and stretch), with marks on every question
- A full mark scheme with marking notes
- Teacher notes with timings, questions to ask, answers to listen for and common misconceptions
All files are editable PowerPoint and Word documents. Free to use, adapt and share with your department.
In the interest of transparency: I teach H446 and built Lesson Studio, the tool that produced this pack from the specification point. I checked and edited it before sharing.
