Ade & Hannah are Detectives on The Regional Cyber Crime Unit for the West Midlands region. They peer lead The National Cyber Choices program for West Midlands, West Mercia, Staffordshire & Warwickshire Police force areas.
Cyber Choices is all about helping young people to make the right choices in their online behaviour. We want to support them in understanding the law and making informed decisions when using technology. We promote positive, legal cyber opportunities, both in training and skills development and in future careers.
We work with individuals who are at risk of, or on the cusp of, committing cyber-dependent crimes. We aim to avoid criminalisation of these young people, and work with them to educate them about the Computer Misuse Act.
We also offer free training for school staff and other partners about the Cyber Choices programme, including when and how to make a referral to us.
We have developed a training video to help teachers deliver a lesson that covers The Computer Misuse Act 1990 and The Ethical Use of Technology. The lesson can be delivered in around 30 minutes and is ideal for PSHE, IT or Computer Science lessons. The video is just over 11 minutes long and is broken down into four sections with pause points in between that allow the teacher to engage in conversation with the students to discuss what they saw and the ethical impact on those involved. The attached 'teacher / trainer delivery pack' contains all of the information and support along with the link to the video. The video is hosted on our YouTube channel and has English subtitles. We have demonstrated the video to students from Year 5 to Year 11 as well as in Colleges.
Please don't hesitate to reach out to us at cyberchoices@westmidlands.police.uk for help or support.
