Small Basic KS3 Scheme - introduction to programming

Curriculum Topic Programming

A set of 5 lessons to introduce textual programming with Small Basic. I made these with year 7 and 8 in mind, and they were mostly very popular. Each lesson introduces simple concepts like variables, loops, conditionals, subroutines.

Many pupils loved the challenges, and came up with their own creative variations (often accidentally, but sometimes on purpose!)

I have sample code for most of the challenges if needed, but ideally you should have a go at any programming task yourself before teaching it :-)

Each lesson is about an hour's worth (including teacher introduction, starters etc.) I used a game to introduce the first 2 lessons - pupils sat in pairs with one facing my and one facing away, I drew a picture on the board and the one facing had to describe it to the other. Can then limit them to only using keywords like Forward 10, Right 90, etc.
