Hierarchy of Visual Programming gives an overview of coding from Keystage 1 to Keystage 5. It is useful to see what students are capable of at each Keystage and to understand how students could progress. There are other programs available, but all of these have been tested in anger and most importantly are free to use.

This shows an order of visual programming languages in order of difficulty:

  • Daisy the Dinosaur
  • Cargobot
  • Hopscotch
  • Scratch
  • Game Salad
  • Unity
  • All programs are free to use, but some may incur charges or royalties for professional publishing. Other programs are available, which might be just as effective, but these are the ones I have experience of.

There is a YouTube Video explaining the hierarchy.
