AI in education: a practical starting point for teachers

AI is already influencing education – from lesson planning and feedback to administration and data analysis. But for many working in schools and colleges, it can feel unclear, overwhelming or even risky.

AI is opening exciting opportunities for educators. While 57% of teachers believe AI will play a bigger role in education in the future, only 9% of UK teachers currently feel confident teaching AI.* This means there’s huge potential for growth - and with the right support, every educator can build the confidence to lead in this space.

That’s where AI Confidence comes in.

AI Confidence is a new series of free CPD modules created to help all educational staff understand and use AI with confidence and care. Developed by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, in partnership with The Hg Foundation, Microsoft and Cognizant, the modules are designed specifically for the realities of school and college life. The module content has been trialled in two multi academy trusts, Ark Schools and The Harris Federation, so it reflects real classroom experience and practical insight.

A practical, teacher friendly introduction

The first module, Getting Started with AI in Education, provides a clear, accessible introduction to AI. In around 45–60 minutes, you’ll explore:

  • What AI is (and what it isn’t)
  • How common AI tools work at a basic level
  • Practical examples of how AI can support teaching and learning
  • Using AI tools as part of the module
  • Key considerations around safety, ethics and responsible use in education

The content is grounded in real scenarios and adapted for different roles, so you can focus on what matters most in your day-to-day work.

What others are saying about AI Confidence

Here is a selection of feedback from staff in schools and colleges who have already completed an AI Confidence module.

“The toolkit and the prompt library are both brilliant take-aways and I can see myself coming back to these tools in my everyday work. Overall, this is a clear, accessible and well-paced introduction that has genuinely built my confidence in using AI.”

“This was a clear and practical introduction to using AI in education. I liked that it focused on safe and realistic use, not just the tools. The course helped me understand how to write better prompts and why human judgement still matters. I found the examples useful because they felt relevant to everyday school tasks.”

“I already knew a lot about AI, but this course still got me to think about things in a new way. I will be leading staff development on the use of AI and I am definitely going to recommend this course.”
