New computing curriculum will teach AI awareness and digital literacy

We’re pleased to share that the Department for Education has asked the BCS Education team to lead the drafting of updates to England’s National Curriculum for Computing and the associated qualifications. These changes are part of the Government’s response to the Curriculum and Assessment Review and will shape teaching and learning for millions of young people.

Why the curriculum is changing

The independent review highlighted what many teachers have been saying:

  • the current curriculum is too narrow,
  • digital literacy and safe, responsible technology use need greater clarity, and
  • learners need a stronger foundation in data and AI awareness to prepare them for life and work.

The Government has confirmed that Computing should remain the primary subject responsible for digital literacy, critical thinking and foundational AI concepts. These are not “optional extras” - they are essential outcomes that all pupils should gain through Computing.

What this means for qualifications

The Government has announced plans to replace the existing GCSE Computer Science with a broader Computing GCSE that brings together:

  • computer science fundamentals,
  • digital literacy and responsible technology use, and
  • AI and data and information skills.

It will also explore a new post-16 Level 3 qualification in Data Science and AI to support progression into high value technical pathways.

  • Ben Davies MBCS
  • Becci Peters MBCS

Their appointment reflects national recognition of BCS’s expertise across curriculum, assessment and qualifications, and our deep connection with the teaching profession.
