Cycling

There are two cycling disciplines represented at the Olympics.  Track cycling (indoors in a velodrome) and Road Racing (round London’s streets).

Track cycling includes a variety of individual and team events all of which take place around a 250m wooden, slopped track.

Track bicycles are very different from the bikes we own at home. They have no brakes, one gear and cost around £20000.

A team of scientists called the secret squirrel club have been developing bikes for the GB team.

Road bicycles are simply an expensive version of the types of racing bikes that can be bought in any bike shop.  An good road bike will cost a few thousand pounds and weighs about the same as 2 bags of sugar.

On both the road and in the velodrome Team GB reigned supreme, wining a total of 8 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals. Bradley Wiggins’ win in the road time-trial made him the most successful GB Olympian ever with a total of 7 medals.  The London Olympics was the venue for the last ever race by Victoria Pendleton, the most successful female cyclist ever.
