CAS in a Box; ABC - a process to help improve the quality of remote education
Schools are grappling with returning to school as well as preparing for the possibility of more remote teaching. In doing this, they are reviewing emergency remote teaching lessons and are looking for ways to improve and adapt for next steps.
Sept 2020 DfE guidance states;
“Where a class, group or small number of pupils need to self-isolate, or there is a local lockdown requiring pupils to remain at home, we expect schools to have the capacity to offer immediate remote education.
"Schools are expected to consider how to continue to improve the quality of their existing offer and have a strong contingency plan in place for remote education provision by the end of September.” Source: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/actions-for-schools-during-the-coronavirus-outbreak/guidance-for-full-opening-schools
To support schools as they improve the quality of online teaching, the CAS Research Working Group has been coordinating with teachers to adapt the ABC process for schools.
Created by UCL and originally developed for university settings, ABC is a process for designing sequences of learning activities and particularly for transitioning from conventional face-to-face approaches to blended and online activities.
Working with teachers, the CAS Research Working Group has adapted ABC for the current lock down context including developing example materials for primary and secondary classes for computing, literacy and numeracy lessons.
A CAS in Box of introducing how to use the ABC in Schools materials has been developed and is awaiting cascade by CAS communities to local schools.
Training of community leaders has been organised and is scheduled to start in October 2020. ABC is a simple process that you can use to review your current remote teaching practices and show that you have an approach to improve the quality of your existing offer and have started to use it.
Watch out for your local community event on ABC.
