Queen's University Belfast, in collaboration with CME Group Belfast, is delivering a number of up-skilling and support activities. The aim is to help teachers deliver high-quality GCSE programmes in computing (in particular the programming variant of CCEA’s GCSE in Digital Technology) and through this equip students with the skills they will need to excel within A-level and further study.
The activities will start with a 10 week course for ICT and computing teachers who wish to refresh or develop their programming skills, and who are either delivering or planning to deliver CCEA’s GCSE in Digital Technology.
This free course will be based around the Route B: Programming variant of the GCSE in Digital Technology and will cover digital development concepts and practices.
The course will equip participants with the confidence and understanding needed to teach coding skills, as well as offering a set of course materials that participants can adapt and tailor to their own teaching. The course will involve some independent study each week. No prior experience of programming is assumed.
The course will be primarily taught in Python (with corresponding C# resources provided as part of the extra course materials).
Teaching will cover data types and programming constructs. A number of other fundamental topics will also be covered, including data mining in Excel.
This up-skilling course builds upon Queen's University's experience of delivering a series of A-level training courses to over 110 computing teachers from over 50 different schools.
The next ten-week course starts on 23rd January 2019: classes take place each Wednesday, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
