CAS North West Manchester provided a number of Sphero for the pupils of St Mark's to investigate. The project was led by CAS Master Teacher Donna Rawling and her case study is detailed below.
The loan was taken over a half-term period of seven weeks and was used primarily with our group of Digital Leaders as an enhancement to our after school Code Club.
The Digital Leaders are all Key Stage 2 children, ranging from Y3-Y6, with an almost even mix of boys and girls, assisted by one of our ex Digital Leaders, a Year 8 boy who returns every week to lead groups and support.
We were able to secure the use of our school hall for these sessions ( something we were unable to do in lesson time)
What we did
The children initially worked in groups of 2 or 3, familiarising themselves with controlling the Sphero and completing the Sphero App challenges, testing their ability to control speed and direction.
These skills were further honed over the second week.
In subsequent weeks, the children experimented with the SPrk Lightning App and began to block code simple routes, navigating cones and skipping rope courses.
A week of drawing with the Sphero ( the challenge was to write their initial using pens, an elastic band and a plastic cup attached to the Sphero ) followed. This tested their finer control skills , and patience!
We lost a week to school Nativities- the staging took up the floor space.
Final weeks were spent devising more elaborate courses, and skittle games, pitching the teams against each other-Team Santa vs Team Rudolph!
It is our intention to purchase a small set for school in the near future and for our Digital Leaders to support their use in Computing lessons across KS2.
These loans are an invaluable service, enabling us to try before we buy and also to learn from other Master Teachers experiences of them in their own settings.
