CAS Master Teachers are the NoE's "Practitioner Champions" – experienced, high-performing classroom teachers with a passion for the subject; enthusiasm, energy, and a desire to support others.
CAS Master Teachers:
- Champion computer science in schools and the wider teaching profession
- Provide training, mentoring and coaching to teachers in their local communities
- Support collaboration between schools and universities.
They are part of the local community of practice and will work alongside their CAS Regional Centres and the local hubs to support teachers of computing in their local area, enable their professional development, and support curriculum change. Specifically:
- They are active members of Computing At School
- They will hold QTS and be working (for at least 2 full days a week) in a state-funded Primary, Middle, Secondary school or FE College
- They will have received 'Good' or 'Outstanding' from their most recent performance appraisal
- Their Headteacher must state a willingness to support the teacher in the role of a CAS Master Teacher It is expected that CAS Master Teachers will (with the support of their Head Teacher) spend approximately three hours each week fulfilling their role in a way that supports their own personal professional development and benefits their own school.
This support may take the form of low-cost training sessions and other mentoring and coaching opportunities. Such support forms an essential part of developing a community of professional practice, alongside the other activities initiated by local CAS Hubs and our University partners in the Network of Excellence. As well as the subject and pedagogical knowledge CAS Master Teachers help develop, a key part of the role is building a supportive relationship, based on mutual trust among colleagues.
All CAS Master Teachers will have a passion for the subject, enthusiasm, energy and active involvement in CAS activities. Not everyone is a subject expert when they start, but all are respected classroom practitioners. Master Teachers are, first and foremost, teachers.
Why become a CAS Master Teacher?
There are many reasons why teachers wish to become a CAS Master Teacher:
- enhanced career development
- recognition of their own status as a teacher
- opportunity to help and support other colleagues
- improve their own teaching of the subject
- access to professional development opportunities
In a survey of CAS Master Teachers carried out in October 2015 over 93% agreed or agreed strongly that they find the Master Teacher activities satisfying, over 95% agreed or agreed strongly that they felt proud to be a CAS Master Teacher and that over 90% agreed or agreed strongly that being a CAS Master Teacher had helped with their career and professional development.
What is expected of a CAS Master Teacher?
CAS Master Teachers act as ambassadors for computing. We want teachers to feel that they can rely on Master Teachers as a professional network of support. For that reason, each Master Teacher, and their Head Teacher, agree to a number of ground rules. These are:
- Build, and actively contribute to, a community of practice in association with your CAS Regional Centre, local hub network, University Partners and local schools
- Provide training and support to meet local need and demand for teachers of Computing, and to be professional in all dealings with those requiring support and help
- Share all resources used during CPD events on the CAS Community site (using a Creative Commons license)
- Respect copyright when producing resources to support CPD
- Comply with CAS guidance when working with external organisations
- Keep a record of relevant and related activity each term
- Complete an annual audit
- Agree to your name and contact details being published on the public register of active CAS Master Teachers.
- Maintain own professional development in computing education Should a CAS Master Teacher no longer meet the basic requirement of a practising teacher, active in his/her local CAS Community, CAS reserves the right to withdraw use of the title.
