The CAS Regional Centre for Northern Ireland is based at Stranmillis University College in Belfast. Staff members Irene Bell and Ann O'Neill have worked to create awareness of the importance of computing to our pupils and develop a collegiate network between industry, education and government.
This year our Annual Conference took place on Friday June 23rd 2017 and we were delighted to be joined by both Simon Humphreys and Miles Berry from CAS(UK). Two very important announcements were made at the conference:the new role to be played by the Queen's University School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and the launch of the first 2 schools in Northern Ireland becoming UKIE Digital SchoolHouse schools.
In Queen’s University Belfast, computing is taught in the School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. The school’s 30+ computing specialists cover a comprehensive range of subjects in over 70 taught courses at bachelor’s and master’s level, including Java, C++ and C# programming, software engineering, data structures and algorithms, architectures and networks, web technologies, mobile applications, databases, user experience design and professional practice. In is very exciting to have this expertise formally under the 'CAS Banner'.
St Malachy's High School Castlewellan, De La Salle College and Ballyclare High School have been awarded UKIE Digital SchoolHouse status. We look forward to hearing about their work with local schools in further promoting the computing agenda.
